About your pearls

The pearls used in our jewellery are freshwater cultured pearls, ethically sourced and farmed by sustainable methods. The pearls are formed in freshwater mussels which live in lakes, rivers, ponds and other bodies of fresh water.

Pearls are created when and irritant gets inside a mussels shell, like a grain of sand. It covers the irritant with a secreted substance called nacre which is a thin layer of calcium carbonate. The nacre deposit eventually develops into a pearl. Pearls are usually misshapen because the irritants come in all shapes and sizes. Perfectly round pearls are rare and that’s why they are more expensive.

Pearls have been a source of fascination for centuries. They have been considered the most magical and feminine of all gems and are the only one created by a living organism. Pearls emanate a certain warmth and glow not found in other gems, due to their unique beginnings.

The pearl is the birthstone for June, and also the anniversary gem for the Third and Thirtieth Wedding Anniversaries. Recognised as the emblem of modesty and purity, pearls have also come to symbolise a happy marriage.

How pearls are valued

A Pearls value is determined by a combination of lustre, size, colour, symmetry and lack of surface flaw. It’s the lustre that differentiates between different qualities of pearl. Larger pearls are usually more valued and perfectly round large pearls are very rare, so therefore more expensive.

Take Care of your freshwater pearls

As pearls are soft gemstones they react to chemicals and heat. So put your pearls on last and avoid hairspray, perfume and cosmetics.

Clean them with a dry or damp soft cloth or chamois, and keep away from getting them wet. Avoid commercial jewellery cleaners unless specified on the label.

They are delicate so don’t rub them against harder jewellery like diamonds. Store them in the soft bag they come in.
